Seven Facts: A Meme

Diane at Emerging Quaker has tagged me along with six others. Here are the rules:

1. Link to your tagger and post these rules on your blog.

2. Share 7 facts about yourself on your blog, some random, some weird.

3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blogs.

4. Let them know they are tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

5. Present an image of martial discord (as in "war," not as in "marriage") from whatever period or situation you’d like.

Thanks, Diane. Here goes:

1. I like to walk and read at the same time.

2. I used to like my hair- especially decades ago; now I enjoy having no, or very little hair!

3. My favorite seasons are Spring and Autumn, perhaps in that order. Summer and Winter are alright, as well- and if I lived further south, I'd miss the four seasons.

4. My favorite pie is cherry.

5. Most of the time, I prefer to read several books at a time, especially if I'm doing heavy reading. Unless I'm particularly interested in a subject, or run into a page turner.

6. I like to hear the Bible being read, did so for years, then quit for awhile. Back to listening to a more dramatized version, and quite well done through The Bible Experience, and my wife Deb likes it!

7. We recently became grandparents, and I had the most fun last Sunday morning, getting to hold Morgan.

I had included a painting, later providing the link for it, but have removed it, and will just skip this part, since I don't really want to work through permissions to use copyrights.

Seven I now tag in alphabetical order: Craver VII; Halfmom, AKA, Susan; Laure; L.L. Barkat; Mike; Nancy.

Thank you for all your kind comments... still haven't found out anything about the strange graffiti appearing round town! And the bathtub planter is outsside a local antique store.
I like cherry pie too, but it's blueberry season right now so we're halfway through the SECOND homemade bluberry pie.... my tongue is permanently blue.

I see you used my painting of Jesus here without permission. Please remove it at once and see my personal email to you as well. Thank you.

Joe,
I didn't think about it when I downloaded it off Google images, but later thought about it and immediately sent an email to you to which you've responded.

Thanks. No problem.

it was fun.

I didn't see Joe's painting of Jesus, but I'm confident that no matter how good it was, it still could not capture the God of glory veiled in human flesh appropriately. No matter how talented Joe is, I'm certain his painting of Jesus diminished God and His glory, so, Ted, you were better off removing it from your site anyway!

Nancy,
Glad you did! I did too.

Triston,
I have a relative, a godly man, who also is opposed to any painting of Jesus. I'm on the other side of the iconoclasm controversy, and interestingly, Martin Luther is with me on that!

I'm sure people can fall into idolatry through paintings and statutes, and that they do at times.

But icons are purposefully austere and seem emotionless because they were painted to help people reflect on the reality. It wasn't supposed to be a true image of Jesus, for example.

Of course the Christian councils are important in formulating Christian orthodoxy through the early centuries, against varioius heresies - one excellent example.

I believe that God did guide the Church in those earlier councils, and it was a struggle. Somewhere in all of this, in a later council, the issue of icons was taken up.

I see icons and paintings or images as just intended to be a window to help people focus on God. For example, paintings on stain glassed windows of Bible stories, for those during medieval times who could not read and did not have their own Bible.

If making no graven images is as literal as some make it to be, then God violated his own command in the making of the cherubim over the ark of the covenant, and supremely so when he sent his Son, who pointed people to himself, as God, but in a way that could lead the faithful to true worship of God in Jesus (and of Jesus himself, of course).

So I see pictures and descriptions of Jesus as harmless in themselves. Indeed, our faith is Incarnate. God did become flesh and appeared visibly among us in the Person of Jesus. What he actually looked like and looks like, is really unimportant, the fact that he is fully human as well as being God, is important, of course. And that he died for our sins, was resurrected, ascended to the right hand of the Father as the true Lord over all, and will return to bring that reign of God's kingdom on earth, as it is in heaven.

So that's my take on it, Triston. I know I and some close relatives of mine disagree on it. Interesting, and maybe you can give more of your thoughts on it, sometime.

Thanks.

Nancy,
I thought it was fun, as well, though a bit time consuming for me at the time. Though the seven things listed was pretty easy and quick, I think.

Shammickite,
A good blue, indeed! I especially love blue berries freshly picked!

You do have lovely pics, and you live in a lovely area, it looks like. I love green and gardens and plants and trees. All of that!

Thanks.

Bad link on Iconoclasm in previous comment, Triston. Hopefully this hits that.

Thanks again for removing the painting. Please I hope all who commented about it can appreciate that illustrations and comics are my business, so I really must maintain the revenue aspects of it. It really is nothing personal -- just business. Thanks for your quick response.

Hey Ted,
I have no love for icons, but at the same time, I'm not sure it is necessarily wrong to depict Jesus because God did take on a human form and so, I suppose it is not wrong to depict Jesus' humanity. I probably responded more aggressively than I would have normally because Joe's response bothered me....Any how, where I definitely draw the line is trying to depict the trinity and specifically God the Father. It is a clear violation of Exodus 20:4. It may be okay to use some depictions that God has used (such as the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove or flames of fire or Jesus in His humanity), but it is a dangerous business to try and represent God in an image. All we have to go on to create any painting are things found in creation, which by very definition are lesser than God and not the Creator. Artists who do so can quickly become guilty of which Paul speaks: "[They] exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man....Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity". Rom. 1:23-24

Any how, I'm not as hard-nosed on this as you may think. It doesn't bother me to see paintings of Jesus in His humanity on the cover of Sunday School material. But it is a whole other matter to try and depict the God of glory. It is impossible, futile; it of necessity will rob God of glory and is sin.

i too had a problem with joe's decision in the use the image that he painted.

now i realize that it is not something for me to have a problem with, but, it was actually something for me to talk to God about. that way, if there is something in me, or in joe, that is not the way that God wants for it to be, than God will work in that.

i praise God for Joe, for his painting, and for our all of our feelings about Joe and the way the painting is used.
i trust that God is at work in our lives and is in control.

Ted M. Gossard said...

Joe,
I understand. No problem at all. It is hard in this day and age when people copy all sorts of thing they shouldn't with the technology available.

Thanks, and your welcome!

Ted M. Gossard said...

Triston,
Good words and I'm in agreement essentially. Well put, too. And certainly sinful to try to depict God in an image or painting.

And you are with Luther on this, I guess! :)

Ted M. Gossard said...

Nancy,
I myself have no problem with the painting and thought it matched the rule in the meme well, plus I could bring out the gospel as I did.

But copyright laws are important, and Joe makes his living with his painting and comics. So I have no problem with Joe making that point and asking me to remove it.

Thanks, sister.

I haven't forgotten, Ted. Funny thing... I was preparing to dust off an older meme that was almost the same, except that it was before I started using my own photography, and the picture of children playing tag was some stock photography from Flickr or Google. And I didn't note the source.

Pie. Hmmm... right at this moment, I wouldn't mind blueberry a la mode with fresh brewed coffee on the side.

Ted M. Gossard said...

Craver,
That pie sure sounds good along with the coffee! Look forward to reading yours.

Yeah, I think I'll just use my own pics fron now on, unless I can find a site that makes it clear they are free downloads. But I don't need to spend an hour trying to figure that one out.

I look forward to reading yours!
